The New York Times Finally Has “Fresh Doubts” About Trump’s Diplomacy

Fifteen months into the worst presidency in American history, the New York Times has finally acknowledged that Donald Trump’s war with Iran has “tested the limits of his unorthodox diplomatic style,” and raised “fresh doubt about his freestyle tactics.” While the Times prides itself on reporting “All the News That is Fit to Print,” it has spent more than a year downplaying the unfit personnel appointed to national security positions, the policies that have seriously damaged relations with key allies, and the destruction of any responsible national security process.
Even before Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, it was obvious that men and women were being appointed to key national security positions they were not fit to occupy. While former senator Marco Rubio might have appeared qualified, he has used his positions as secretary of state and national security adviser to strengthen Trump’s campaign to deport activist foreign students studying at American universities. Since his appointment, the Department of State has played no role in key diplomatic matters.
Nearly all of our key international issues have been managed, indeed mismanaged, by two billionaire real estate operatives, Steve Wytkoff and Jared Kushner, who have earned the United States no credibility or respect in the global community. Vice President J.D. Vance has defended the work of Wytkoff and Kushner, explaining that it “turns out a lot of diplomacy boils down to a simple skill: don’t be an idiot.” Rubio contends that he is unbothered by the heavy diplomatic responsibilities of Wytkoff and Kushner because “they check in with him regularly.” Rubio doesn’t mention that the two tycoons are negotiating business deals as they travel!
When national security adviser Michael Waltz added a journalist to a private and sensitive internet chat that discussed U.S. military strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, he was soon replaced by Rubio. Rubio proved he could run the National Security Council (in addition to the Department of State) into the ground in no time. Half the staff members of the NSC were quickly dispatched because a right-wing conspiracist, Laura Loomer, warned Trump that they were not loyal to the president. The State Department and the National Security Council, our most important national security entities, have played no role in deciding or even implementing policy regarding the war with Iran, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the war between Israel and Palestine.
Meanwhile, several dozen U.S. embassies remain with no ambassador at the helm, including five nations that are involved in the war with Iran. Key ambassadorial positions have been vacant since January 2025 in Europe (including Germany), South America (including Brazil), the Pacific (including South Korea), the Middle East (Egypt and Iraq), Southwest Asia (Pakistan), and even Russia. A convicted felon, Charles Kushner, is the ambassador to France; a Christian evangelist (Mike Huckabee) is ambassador to Israel; and two right-wing propagandists have ambassadorial posts in Belgium and Poland.

Giridharadas continued, “There’s no one saying, ‘F---, I didn’t know, but I read the story now. You are despicable. Never call me again.’ Not one email that I’ve seen.”
Giridharadas, who has written extensively on the “Epstein class” on his Substack The.Ink, told host Joanna Coles that Epstein’s crimes were “enabled by the silence and complicity and overlooking and looking away of a much larger number of people. And I don’t think you get the former without the latter.”
The best-selling author argued that Epstein exploited a “lack of courage” that he said defines “the age of hyper-connected networks,” where connections in elite circles is the ultimate currency.
“Your wealth is your connections and the density and breadth of your connections to all these other people,” he explained.

US media barely touches Epstein links with Israeli intelligence

Noticeably absent from US news coverage of US President Donald Trump’s waffling over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files is any mention of the child sex predator’s apparent ties to Israeli intelligence.
A 13 July Nexis search of US news outlets found that, of the 383 stories unleashed by Trump’s broken promise to reveal everything Epstein, only a single article broached ties between Epstein and Israel’s intelligence agency, the Mossad – and then tried to undercut it.
The single story that did mention Mossad links, on 10 July in Atlantic Online, the online edition of The Atlantic Monthly, merely dismissed those making a case for Epstein’s ties to Mossad as “a claim often expressed with anti-Semitic rhetoric.”
Such omission, however, didn’t stop former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on 14 July from rejecting any Epstein-Mossad links as “categorically and totally false.”

MintPress investigative reporter Whitney Webb summarized an interview by former CBS News executive producer and Narativ investigative journalist Zev Shalev with former senior executive for Israel’s Directorate of Military Intelligence Ari Ben-Menashe. There, Webb summed up, Ben-Menashe claimed “not only to have met Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, back in the 1980s, but that both Epstein and Maxwell were already working with Israeli intelligence during that time period.”

Nearly a month before President Donald Trump met Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in 2018, Jeffrey Epstein attempted to pass a message to Russia’s top diplomat: If you want to understand Trump, talk to me.
“I think you might suggest to putin that lavrov can get insight on talking to me,” Epstein wrote in a June 24, 2018, email to Thorbjorn Jagland, a former prime minister of Norway who was leading the Council of Europe at the time of the exchange. Lavrov was an apparent reference to Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s longtime foreign minister.
In the email exchange, one of hundreds released Wednesday by congressional investigators, Epstein indicated he had previously talked about Trump with Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s forceful ambassador to the United Nations, before Churkin died in 2017.
“Churkin was great,” Epstein, the late convicted sex offender, wrote. “He understood trump after our conversations. it is not complex. he must be seen to get something its that simple.”
